Not Doing on the Journey

"But inwardly, for the archer himself, right shots have the effect of making him feel that the day has just begun. He feels in the mood for all the right doing, and what perhaps is more important, for all the right not doing...

"Well, at least we have gotten over the worst, " I said to the Master when he announced we were going on to some new exercises. "He who has a hundred miles to walk should reckon ninety as half the journey," he replied quoting a proverb. "Our new exercise is shooting at the target."

Eugene Herrigal

Commentary

Herrigal spent months just stepping up to his proper stance to pull the bow string, before he was allowed to loose an arrow, much less shoot at a target. The simultaneous attention to form and not-doing was confounding for Herrigal until one day unthinkingly he did it right and his Master said, "That's it". Many months later he said that only acceptance based on complete equanimity would allow a second shot to occur with the same 'not-doing' after a successful first shot. Golfers often comment on the same thing. So it was he began to identify and understand the Eastern pusuit of the egoless state.

"Do a good job(learn well) now...
later, can teach in the other cities..."

Master Lee

"In the early morning the ancients
opened thier eyes from their meditations and awoke the young ones
who had not the discipline to bear witness to the entire night.
The masters gently pointed to the dawn
the lesson of life's beginning was repeated daily.
The world began when the first ray of light
flashed across the darkness.
In the same way, morning begins
when the first ray of dawn illuminates the night sky.

Therefore if we want to know the Tao,
we need only remember
that we are part of a way constantly dawning."
